Great Family Camcorder, but in low light. . .
I bought this camcorder in the fall of 2003 (it is Jan 2005 as I write this). We bought it to take with us on our trip to Disney World. It replaced our Sony 8mm Steady Shot camcorder that we bought back in 1994. I wanted a camcorder that was small enough to pack into a belt pack. The old 8mm required a good-sized camera bag that was a pain to lug around places like Disney World.

I really liked the fact that the camera could take still pictures too, as it meant there was a chance we wouldn't have to lug our Olympus D510 (2MP camera).

It worked quite well for that trip. An added benefit of it being so small was the fact that I could bring it along on long hikes. I took it with us the next year when we went to South Dakota to hike the Black Hills & Badlands.

Outdoors, this camera is excellent. The still photos are OK, I wouldn't recommend getting this camera to replace a camcorder AND digital camera, you won't be satisfied.

Inside and in low-light, however, the camera leaves a lot to be desired. It is understandable, the small lens can only gather so much light. I would say that our older 8mm camera performs better in low light. For indoor shots, I usually try to make sure we have ample lighting. The lack of an acessory shoe on this camera prevents you from attaching one of those [annoying] video camera spotlights.

The swing out LCD is the right size for viewing, it rotates around completely so you can use it for self-portraits, or just getting some really odd-angled shot (my relatively new Canon A85 has a similar LCD, though much smaller).

The one thing that I find is the most useful as of late is something I did not research as a requirement when shopping for a camcorder. The Analog->Digital pass-through feature blew away two other Analog Video capture cards. My old Dell (4550) came with a video capture card that would drop numerous frames. I bought an ATI All-In-Wonder card to import all my old analog and it didn't even compare to the pass through on the canon. Now I connect my old 8mm to the Optura 300, set the video mode to pass through and capture the video through the 1394 port, storing as .avi (on a nice big drive).

I've never used any of the funky digital effects. I would suggest saving your $$ and not making the inclusion/lack of effects part of your criteria for choosing a camcorder. You can do everything you need in your video editing software (I use Adobe Premiere Elements 1.0 now).

Somehow I have become a Canon-Fan over the past few years. When I bought this camcorder it was the only Canon gadget I owned. This past year I added the Canon A85 and the Digital Rebel to my collection of digital toys. To add to that last note, I am 'looking' at another camcorder and am only looking at Canon models (the Optura Xi to be exact).

I realize it might be late in the game to be rating this camera as the Optura 400 & 500 are out now. If you are researching those please take my experiences with Canon & the Optura line as positive notes on their offerings.

Great camera with certain limitations
I bought this camera just a day before my trip to Alaska and it worked out great. Since there was not much time to read the thick manual, the controls were intuitive enough to operate. The video quality was great.
Pros:
- Great size. Very compact
- Great video quality with 2 Mega Pixals
- Easy to operate.

Cons:
- Still pictures come better in light. Not good if the light is less
- Red eye reduction does not seem to work well for still pictures
- In the video, the sound recording seem to pick up wind and other noises more than you actually hear.
- Some times still pictures are not in focus.

Fantastic Digital Camera Choice
I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who is in the market for a camcorder. I purchased the optura 300 several months ago and have been utilizing it heavily ever since. The camera takes excellent movies of both indoor and outdoor events. I could not be happier with my choice. I did purchase a longer-lived battery which has worked out well. I keep the standard battery charged as a backup, but the larger battery has never died on me even during days that I shot a significant amount of footage.

I would like to point out of few issues I have had with it:
1) The instruction manual leaves much to the imagination, especially with how to download the recorded motion pictures onto a PC. There are many other gaps in the manual.

2) This camera is not for the technologically challenged. I would guess that this is not limited to this specific camera, but is an issue with the entire class of cameras. To burn DVDs and do any kind of editing, the user must have a video capture card & firewire installed on their PC. In addition, downloading movies onto a PC requires LOTS of hard drive space. I installed a 2nd hard drive for this purpose. In addition I needed to install a DVD RW drive so I could burn DVDs. I also upgraded my RAM. Although all of these are easy installs in newer PC's, it can be a daunting task just for a person to figure out what is actually needed not to mention knowing how to actually install it. Combined with shortcomings in the manual, I could see this being fatal for some users. If you are technologically challenged, I would recommend the cameras that burn directly to DVD.

3) At the extreme end of the zoom, the camera seems to have trouble focusing and is very shaky. This is not that big of an issue as long as the user keeps this in mind while framing the video.

4) I am not really happy with the quality of the still images captured by this camera. These images can be saved onto a flash card or onto the digital tape. With perfect lighting, the images are good, but I have found that when the flash is needed, the images are completely over exposed. The red-eye reduction feature does not work at all to reduce red eye.

Please do not let these negatives taint my review. I love this camera but I wanted to put all the issues that I have found with it out there.

Lacking in Features
The camera boasts lots of features and a decent price, however Canon has omitted one very important feature that is very crucial to some users such as myself- It has no ability (per the Canon Service Reps) to have the video pass- thru without having the on-screen data shown on the recieving end (such as on a video switcher). The only way to get that data off is to RECORD your video. We needed to use the camera for sending a live video feed, but alas, we were not able to get the on screen info to not show on the final feed destination. The Canon rep said that this is the only video camera that he has seen without the proper menu options to correct this.

Other than that, the video quality appeard to be very nice.

THIS IS MY FIRST CAMCORDER BUT IVE SEEN SEVERAL DIFFERENT ONES. BUT THIS CAMCORDER OUT RATES ANY OF IT.. YOU CAN DO SO MUCH WITH IT WITHIN THE CAMCORDER OR ON TO YOUR COMPUTER.. YOU JUST HAVE TO READ THE BOOK CAREFULLY.. THIS IS THE BEST DVD CAMCORDER AND I SUGGEST YOU GET ONE..

My experience
I bought a DC40 in Feb, 2007. From the first day, I found that I couldn't transfer the vedio from the camcorder to PC. I thought that it may be the problem of software, I contacted the Roxio, which is the manufacturer of software. It was very difficult to get support from Roxio. After many trys, they didn't tell me what was wrong, and stopped responding my questions.

I read the manual carefully, but couldn't find any answers for the problem. I just gave up.

In the middle of July, I found that the camcorder was dead, couldn't be charged. I called Canon. It was easy to get some one on phone to talk to. I was told to mail it or drop it to the nearest repair center. I dropped it to a repair center just 20 mins away.

The young lady of repair center took the camcorder, and told me that it may be the charger didn't work. The problem of transfering vedio may be caused from the same part of camcorder. I was told that it should be fixed in 5 business days.

I received the call from repair center after 8 business days. I went there to pick up, the girl gave the fixed camcorder. I tried to use it right after I got out the door, but it was not working. I found that the battery was missing. The girl couldn't find the battery. She gave me a new one. I tried to charge the battery after I got home, it was not working. I had to go back with the AC adapter. It was the defective of the adapter. Now it is working, charging battery and importing the vedio to PC from the camcorder.

I may be just unlucky.

Good Camera With Some Annoying Flaws
I've had this camera for about 2 years now, and I've been very pleased with it overall. There are a few things that I've learned to live with however.

Using it outdoors, it shoots beautifully. The picture is crystal clear. The same goes for indoors, in well-lit situations. But in low light situations, the picture is grainy and quite dark. You can futz with the manual settings to try and compensate for it, but the picture simply won't be as great as you would like it to be.

Another nitpick is that the files are proprietary, and only works with the editing software that comes with the camera. I'll never understand why companies will do that sort of thing. There is a work-around out there that will allow you to convert the files into more common mpeg files, but I'll let you look for that yourself.

Aside from those issues, it's a very fine HDD camera.

Dont buy this
We have had this unit for a year now and are pretty disappointed for the money we paid. We upgraded to this JVC hd model from a Panasonic minidv that was great. First indoors the camcorders light is nearly useless at more than three feet. The video picture qualty is terrible unless you turn the frame rate down. I think basicaly this is a good unit for the bright outdoors. The camera is well thought out functionally has great controlls. The software that came with it is somewhat usefull but not good or up to par for the cost. I sold our 5 year old panasonic for a 100 bucs and I really miss it.

good camera but burning DVD !!!!
its a great camera except burning the DVD procedure is hard. It was hard for me to Edit and burn the DVD. Its good for those people who have great knowledge of Photo/Movie editing software. indoor recording is not that great eigher. great for Outdoor recording.

Good camera for a Good price
I have been using this camera for almost 3 years now, and I can say that it's a little workhorse most definately useful for family videos and can handle small projects for family, friends, and if you need to make a video on the cheap to get into a film school! It's a 1 CCD and it shows, and the quality of the CCD is also not the greatest, but hey what can you expect? :) I despise the fact the tape loading/unloading is from the bottom. But all in all you get what you pay for- some nice additions are the headphones AND microphone jacks, IEEE 1394 and USB, memory stick capability, MPEG recording, and even USB streaming! It's a good piece of equipment- I'm happy with it.

Bad tape technology
Before you buy, think about the cost of the DV tapes. They are about $6 each, retail, and EXTREMELY fragile. One broke in my camera, and damaged something when being taken out. This was a $70 repair, while it was still under warranty. I don't know how much it would have cost after warranty period was over. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy a camera with a sturdier, cheaper media, and from a manufacturer that respects its warranty.

The Best Camera for the Money
I am a student filmmaker of fourteen years. Previous to my purchasing of this camera, I had been using my mother's PD-100P. (My mother is a film producer). I needed to stop using her camera because it annoyed her that I knew more about it than she did, and because I needed the convenience of being able to use a camera without supervision and whenever I wanted. Being parents, my mother and father forced me to do my research on camera's, and made me earn all the money for it, instead of spending money I already had in savings. From the beggining I knew I wanted a Sony. Everybody in the business talked about how they were the top of the line, the best in every dimension. Still, I looked at Cannon's, Fuji's, Panasonic's, and just about every other make. After my gigantic search, I finally decided to go with this camera because of picture quality, format, Firewire (i.Link), and because of the cost and size. I can tell you, I made the right choice.

A few days after purchasing the camera, a friend of mine (who owns a Cannon) and I got together and did a two-camera shoot for a class production. When I brought the tapes home to edit, I was amazed at the diference in picture and sound quality. Even though we were mostly the same distance away, my camera picked up better quality, denser, and overall more dynamic sound than the Cannon, which I had been told had better sound than the Sony. Of course, the Sony also had much better and more detailed pictures as well. Overall, I was amazed at the quality.

One more thing to mention that is a definit advantage over other consumer camera's that most people overlook: the Intelligent Acessory Show. (IAS) The Sony line of camera's are the only ones that have hot shoes (the devices that you plug in get power from the camera). Most other brands feature cold shoes (the devices you plug in have to get power from another source), meaning you must carry extra cords around whenever you want to plug in an external feature, and you have to make sure that there is always an outlet nearbye.

The overall features of this camera make it the best buy for "the money" out there.

NOTHING BUT PROBLEM
This DVD camcorder was a good price compare to others brand and I make my decision nad bought one,but since you pur a DVD into it is problem.First it dont reconginzed teh DVD say no dic , on and on, when finally acept the disc it will format, if you are lucky . But you are not finished when you are recording it say disk writing error and you have to restart the DVD.

I tought first was the type of disk , but I have use 3 brands and all the DVD recording types and it is the same problem. I call SAMSUNG na dthey tolled me to download some Firmaware after I downloaded even that could not be recognized by the Camcorder.

Finally i decided to return back this camera to SAMSUNG, because it is the only choce for them to fix it. But stay away from that camera. buy SONY, CANON, ETC..
