Video and Still Optics
Using the MPEG4 format, the SVAV25 saves video to Secure Digital (SD) and MultiMedia (MMC) memory cards (an 8 MB SD card is included). With the small size of MPEG4 files--featuring resolution modes of either 320 x 240 or 176 x 144--you can easily post video to your Web site or send files to friends and family via e-mail.

SD MovieStage Ver. 2.5 displays MPEG4 motion images and JPEG still images in thumbnail form and plays them back on a PC. You can also cut and edit motion images and send e-mail with motion images attached.

SD Jukebox Ver. 4.0 Software transfers music from your SD memory card to your PC and allows you to rip CDs to your PC and convert music data to different PC music file formats. Don't buy this item
I regret buying this camera because I cannot view the videos I shot. If you buy a Sony digital camera it shoots video in MPEG4 format and that can be viewed by several programs such as Real Player, Windows Movie Maker, QuickTime, etc. This Panasonic camcorder claims to shoot MPEG, but it does not.

The video files are something called ASF and I cannot find a program to view the videos or to convert them to real MPEGS. Going to the Panasonic site is a complete waste of time because they expect you to have a serial number just to download the program to view the videos in their non standard format.

Save yourself the hassle, and get a Sony that shoots video in a standard format that is read by many programs.

Great Camera
This is my second one. First one lasted 3 1/2 years........I'd buy another one if this breaks!!!

Nice gadget - horrible software support.
The unit itself is well designed. The quality of video is fair, at least for such a compact unit. Photos are near worthless due to horrible quality. My cell phone has far superior images.

Sadly, for all the niceties of the gadget Panasonic chose to cripple the unit with it's software and make it virtually worthless.

a) the videos ARE NOT mpeg4 as advertised. Rather, they are encapsulated in an .asf DRM file which is unviewable by anyone.

b) the voice recorder is fairly useless. Sure it's a digital voice recorder. But nothing can play the digital files it records but the camera. You have no way of converting them or playing them on your PC.

Due to the software implementation this camera because mostly non-functional.

Today I have several videos that I cannot view. You need a special plug-in. That said, Panasonic doesn't let you download without a special code.

I wasn't too impress
Though Canon is a great brand, I wasn't too impress with this particular camcorder. I thought it was a bit grainy...I think the picture quality could have been a little better. I actually return this product.

Quality purchase
I purchased the DC230 as a Christmas gift for my wife. It took a couple of times using it to understand the itnitializing and finalizing processes. But now I consider myself an amatuer expert and enjoy the quality pictures and movies from this camcorder. Would recommend to anyone.

Canon DC230 is fully capable of more than what most people would need
Great Price and nice product. I compared the models on a different web site but made my purchase on Amazon because the price was the best. The DVD's that Amazon recommended I buy with the camera were the wrong ones. Beware of this problem. The record standby mode is confusing and I have several full DVD of nothing but the kitchen counter, when I thought the camera was off and missed the shots I wanted. Zoom was not the 30 to one I expected. Was really no closer than my 12 to one camera. Quit using it after a month and switched to using my 8 megapixel Sony camera for video. Much nicer!

Pretty Flippin' Cool!
I'm about as novice as it gets when it comes to video cameras, but this little Flip Video Mino HD Camcorder is as plug and play as it gets. It's super easy to use...just point and shoot.

The software that comes with it is built right in to the Camcorder...no CD installation. After you've taken a few videos, just plug it in to an available USB port; a short USB extension cable might make connecting the MinoHD to your PC (I own a Dell) a little easier, but in most cases will not be necessary. Once you connect the MinoHD to your PC, the software installs automatically and couldn't be easier to use.

A program to email videos is included right in the software. That's the best way to share videos. Otherwise you'll be storing very large-file videos on your computer, then attaching them to emails that would take up even more hard drive space. The Flip Video email program uploads your video from the MinoHD to a FlipVideo server, and sends the video as a link to your friends/family and cc's your own personal email account. Using Flip's built in email program uses no space on your PC's hard drive.

If you'd prefer to save videos to your computer and send them as attachments, the option is yours, but these HD files are BIG (avg 1 minute HD file = like 70 MB). You may want to (or depending on your personal email program you may HAVE to) reduce the files in order to send them. The Flip software has a program linked to it so that you can reduce file.

Strangely, my Flip software *automatically* copies some of the videos on my Camcorder to my Video folder on My Computer, and they are automatically reduced to like below 5MBs. When I manually want to save a video, if I drag and drop it over to my computer, it saves the video onto my computer at the full HD file size. There is an option in the software to manually save the file at a reduced size onto your computer, but when I do this the videos usually save at between 6 & 10 MBs. I don't how or why the automatic saving is happening, and I can't understand how they are being saved every time at below 5MBs. I think that I'll need to call or email Flip about this (or please comment to this review if you know what's up).

For all you Internet video nuts out there, the software also includes functionality to make it easy to upload videos to YouTube or pretty much whatever your favorite video site is. It comes with a standard Y/W/R video cable to connect to your TV to watch your videos, or you can watch and manage videos right on the Camcorder itself. With the software you can edit down the size of your videos and make movies before you watch or upload.

I've only had the Mino HD for a few weeks, but since it's so easy to use and its size is so convenient, I think I've almost used it as much as the (now prehistoric) hand-held DVD camcorder that I've had for years. I wish that I had the MinoHD years ago when my kids were younger; I'd have captured a lot more memories with such a convenient little gizmo like the MinoHD than I did with my old, clunky DVD camcorder. Oh well, time to make up for lost time!

Excellent fun
Love my Flip.

Drawbacks: can't do close-ups, can't have external microphone attached; buttons operate on a breath so that anything can switch the camera on or off almost; but in every other way it's magnificent.

Bought a little tripod with it, which helps stabilize it sometimes. Just terrific fun.

Great Video - weak camera
Video camera is awesome. Still images are low quality. We bought it for video so it's perfect for our use.

Great camcorder
For the Price this is a great camcorder. A lot better than the lower priced ones. Well worth the money for a first camcorder. But if your looking for one with a little more kick you will have to spend a little more.

Great Camcorder - especially for a novice like me
I took my family to Hawaii and didn't want to haul around my old bulky Panosonic camcorder. So I was looking for something small and affordable (the trip already took most of my savings!) and found this on Amazon for under $450. I'm no expert with camcorders and I don't want to be. I just want to point and shoot great video for the memories. So I did a lot of homework by reading reviews. Also, Sony seems to be the professional choice. So based on rave reviews, I picked the Sony DCR-SR85 Handycam and it turned out to be just what I needed. I like the size as it fits right into my hand and is hardly noticable. The video and sound quality was beautiful, and the ease of use was so SIMPLE. Having a harddrive was really nice since I was accumstomed to changing those lousy tapes. With 60 GB I'll never run out of space.
Not everything is perfect, so my only problems or concerns are: 1) I can't help but jiggle the camera while fumbling to find the zoom button or the button to turn the camera off. This will probably improve as I get better coordinated. 2) The screen is very difficult to see in bright sunlight, so without a viewfinder you have to point and hope. 3) The camera doesn't automatically shut off when you close the screen. So a couple of times I THOUGHT I hit the off button and closed the screen but ended up with 30 minutes of my shoes, the dashboard and very boring conversation. But it was easy to delete. 4) The battery that comes with the camera is whimpy, so spend another $70 and get a 4 hour battery. Use the whimpy one for backup emergency. 5) The 1MP photo quality is garbage. But why buy a camcorder for photos when you can get a fabulous Cannon 8MP Powershot for only $150?
All in all, I love this camera and recommend it highly.
